Album: Dance Gavin Dance - Instant Gratification [2015]

I think it's only fair, if I'm going to talk about We Own The Night, I'd talk about Instant Gratification too. There are many special records that I've loved before I even found out about Dance Gavin Dance, but this was the first record I fell in love with in a way that made me want to talk about it. Whether it was a sudden interest in musical writing and technicality, or because it was just that impressive, this was the catalyst that eventually became this website.

After experiencing the magnificence of We Own The Night, I went straight for the deep dive, starting with the record it called home. Now having heard much of Dance Gavin Dance, it's pretty clear Instant Gratification marked the start of a new golden age for the band, and the turning point for the Tilian era.

This record tweaked their core sound from the past few records in a way that has been monumental for the band, and paved the way for their future album sounds. A lot of the pop sensibilities, unique dynamics and structural choices that first showed up in this record have continued to provide a strong foundation for the records after, and for me, the records before Instant Gratification and the records inclusive and after feel like two completely different eras of the band.

Standout tracks like We Own The Night and Death Of A Strawberry showcase their more pop-leaning capabilities and their knack for catchy vocal melodies alongside robust screams and post-hardcore instrumentation. Despite that, the album boasts a variety of sounds and styles, making the record a very refreshing experience from start to finish. From the rap-infused Eagles vs. Crows to the deliriously heavy Shark Dad, the range they achieve with this tracklist is impressive.

Throughout the record, they never fail to produce quality bangers. It's chock full of great riffs, stellar drumming, awesome lyrics and hypnotic delivery. Their unique brand of swancore instrumentation stays true to itself but continues to evolve with this record, seeing more concise and focused lead work and a noticeable effort on giving rhythm more presence in the guitarwork. To some small extent, it can be said that they traded in some of the chaos of their older material in exchange for more pop-friendly material, but it really is a minor difference if any.

In classic Dance Gavin Dance fashion, there's a lot of great lyrical gold from Jon Mess, a generous sprinkle of musical gimmicks and an undeniable amount of talent underlying every track. Lines like "get that, grab it, go go claws" speak for themselves, and moments like the outro of On The Run are both super fun and cool. The way they smoothly switch between ruthlessly heavy, unreasonably groovy, monumental and comedic is unmatched. Never once in any of the band's discography did I feel like a transition or a section was jarring or out of place, and this record is no exception.

Instant Gratification may have since been overthrown by Mothership and Jackpot Juicer for best album, but it still holds a special place in my heart alongside the other two. First impressions are always important, and for one of my all-time favourite bands, this record is significant to me for sure.

2022 Music - Year in Review

- Personal Reflection -

It's been a very refreshing year for me, both in music and general life. I've always had a profound appreciation for music, but this year I found myself able to dive in deep both as a listener and as a lowly practitioner of music (particularly having picked up guitar and starting to understand music writing at a basic level). Starting this, as well as surprisingly managing to keep up with the rate I so daringly set at the start of the year, has been a small but pertinent point of pride for me.

I'm honestly quite happy with how it's been going. I never intended this project to be made for people to see, in a way it's personal and just for myself, and so far I don't think anyone has found it, so that's a good thing I guess. This regular schedule of writing about music has been an avenue for me to 1. discover music that I otherwise would not have had reason/motivation to look into 2. go out of my way to learn certain concepts and ideas in music, however small, to be able to converse about music better 3. in general, discover more about the music world, whether it be genres, artists or history.

Having something to keep up regularly like this has given me a sort of renewed focus in life. I did start this partially because I was at a loss on how to spend my time, and also because I had so much creative energy with not many avenues of output. I should mention that Auditory Appreciation was started alongside many other personal long-running projects, and the collection of them as a whole served as an anchor for my loose cannon of a sense of purpose. Several of these projects are more direct forms of creative endeavours, and in comparison, this is a more derivative one, writing about music. It has been ultimately very refreshing though, to have somewhere to write about all the love I have for music that I listen to.

My music taste has broadened a lot this year. When I first started developing a ear for modern metal music nearing the end of 2020, that resulted in me having only ears for metal the entirety of 2021. I barely listened to any other genre, and to an extent couldn't appreciate any other genre for what it was. For what it's worth, I loved my music journey in 2021, it was extremely important to me and getting into metal has been one of the best choices I've ever made. Despite that all, I'm glad I was able to step back a bit and loosen my gears, regaining a bit of my musical taste in other genres like soft rock and pop. Having a newfound diversity of sounds that I could appreciate made listening to music that much more exciting and rewarding, diving back into pop as well as the multitude of other genres in rock and alternative music.

I invested a lot more time this year specifically to discover music. Following releases and listening to them the day they drop, researching the genres' communities to comb out significant bands and artists and dip my toes in as many as I could, as well as diving into the back catalogues of artists that I loved but only listened to one or two records of. Artists like Every Time I Die, Knocked Loose and The Devil Wears Prada were names I've heard so many times and finally listened to this year, and have since become some of my favourites. Diving deeper into the discographies of artists like Fall Out Boy, Loathe, Sleep Token, My Chemical Romance and Pierce The Veil have been extremely rewarding, finding some absolute gold in their older records that I now love to death. Discovering some completely new and amazing artists like glass beach, Vildhjarta, Archspire, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows, Tallah and MOTHICA has been some of the most blissful things about the year for me.

I'm looking forward to next year, yet a bit apprehensive. There's a lot of amazing artists that I'm excited for and anticipating a lot of records from, and I have high hopes that 2023 will yet again have a lot of brilliant music for me to consume. Yet, I know that next year I have to step up my game in consuming new music, and I'm not sure how intense of a rate I'll have to push myself to listen to new stuff at. I'm also starting to pick up more instruments, and I'm sure my understanding and appreciation of music and songwriting will only deepen with time. Learning about and loving music is a journey that never ends, and this blog is a great place for me to, in a way, document my journey.

I don't really want to set any goals or hopes for 2023, I'd much rather let things happen as and when they do. Still though, a broad direction can always be beneficial. Other than listening to as much new music as possible, I want to try to delve more into EDM and its many subgenres, and possibly reconnect with my older roots. I used to love EDM when I was younger, especially dubstep, inspired by artists like Skrillex and edIT and proliferated by performers such as Poreotics/Miniotics, Fik-Shun, Les Twins, SoNevable and Shawn Wasabi. Beyond that, I'll let the musical winds blow however it wishes and let myself be taken on another year of musical discovery. When it comes to quantity though, I'm aiming to listen to at least one new record a day. I have no idea how that'll go, but I guess we'll find out as the year goes on, won't we?

Song: Dance Gavin Dance - We Own The Night [Instant Gratification, 2015]

As the year comes to a close, I figured it would be fitting to write about the song that kickstarted this entire thing in the first place. We Own The Night was the first song that made me go "wow" so hard that I just had to tell my friends everything I loved about this song in detail, and whatever that music rant was formed the basis of auditoryappreciation.

This was my first introduction to the eccentric and beautifully chaotic band Dance Gavin Dance, and despite being one of the more pop-leaning tracks in their discography, did justice to the core of their sound. It was my first taste of Tilian's and Jon's vocals, as well as their unique combined dynamic, alongside the tasteful and distinct instrumental sound led by swancore pioneer Will Swan's guitarwork, and it was amazing. I've never found anything more satisfyingly chaotic than this band's music, and it remains one of my all-time favourites, and the gem of Instant Gratification.

I've always adored the chorus of this song the most out of any part. Experiencing the intensity of the full band, relentless in their elegance, was more or less euphoric. Post-hardcore drumming overlayed with frenzied and all-over-the-place guitar licks that still amazingly held melody, while the two vocalists simultaneously dish out sonic assaults of their own unique caliber. I remember gushing about how disgustingly beautiful it was to have Tilian hold high notes behind Jon's solid screaming on the chorus, it had such a pristine and divine musical texture that I never heard before. I also remember pointing out the vocal triplets by Jon, which in hindsight aren't actually triplets, but I found the rhythm of it so unique at the time, especially with how the instrumentals synced up to it.

The guitarwork on this track is astounding. Whether it's the relentlessly chaotic tapping parts on the chorus, the pretty and elegant riff in the second verse or the funky lick going into the switchup/bridge, Will Swan has such a creative way of designing melodies that encapsulate both intensity and complexity without becoming noisy. A genius in every right, his guitarwork across the board of the band's career definitely lean a lot towards difficult and complicated, but I enjoy the challenge learning to play them as a guitarist, and a lot of them are surprisingly fun to play. I love how he paints the soundscape with so much colour while being able to clearly shape the song.

It's common knowledge that Dance Gavin Dance is a band that isn't afraid to be random and have fun with their music, and it's apparent with a lot of their other songs. We Own The Night, however, happens to be one of their most normal and collected tracks in their entire discography, and I love how extravagant and serious it feels, devoid of the usual comedic interjections from Jon. As much as I love his sporadic and nonsensical babbling, I cannot overstate how much I love that his lyrics in this song in particular had a weight of finality and profoundness to it. It made the song as a whole feel so emotionally heavy and lyrically powerful.

After going through the rest of their impressive discography, this song still remains as one of my top few favourites from them. Few songs make such a lasting impression on me as this one, and for both quality and sentiment, this song doubly deserves a spot in my personal musical hall of fame. I will never be able to fully put into words how much I love this song, and that is both a blessing and a curse I am willing to bear. Dare I say it, perfection.

Album: Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit [2015]

That's The Spirit holds a very special place in my heart, and possibly the most important record to me. It was a much needed catharsis in the aftermath of many personal catastrophes, and was simultaneously my introduction to Bring Me The Horizon and modern metal. Since then, I've listened to so much modern metal that's so much heavier, I can see why people dislike the "softness" of this record in retrospect, but as it stands I still love every bit of it.

I didn't really register it at the time, but technically the first track I heard on this record was Throne. I think I picked it up from a Spotify radio mix or possibly TikTok, but I didn't think much of it at the time, so I usually consider Happy Song my proper first impression of the record. I stumbled across one of their live performances of Happy Song, and it struck me as so revolutionarily angry (at the time, at least), I couldn't help but be captivated at the emotional capacity that song brought across.

Not long after, my deep dive and subsequent obsession with Bring Me The Horizon began. I moved on to Drown, loving the anthemic catharsis and truthfully therapeutic emotiveness that song had. Then there was Follow You, which was a great heartfelt cynical romantic love song that resonated with me at the time. After that was True Friends, being the angriest song on the record and, quite frankly, also perfect for what I needed to feel at the time. Eventually, my heart settled on Doomed, which was and still is an underrated track in my opinion. I feel it is some of Bring Me The Horizon's best work, perfectly harnessing all the feelings and emotions that the record represents in a very unique and emotionally charged way, most prominently in the chorus.

I spent a lot of time soaking in this record. Every track has its moments, understandably some more than others, but every song was great in the end. I have to commend Oh No, I loved it way more than I thought I would, and their take on a party pop song was way more of a bop than you'd imagine.

That's The Spirit is undeniably a pivotal record, both for me sentimentally and for the band sonically. It's an emotionally powerful and musically brilliant piece of work from the band, and has one of the biggest spots in my heart in all of music. I don't think I will ever find enough words to accurately express how I feel about this album, but as cheesy as it is, I truly am grateful to have come across this in my life.
