2022 Music - Year in Review

- Personal Reflection -

It's been a very refreshing year for me, both in music and general life. I've always had a profound appreciation for music, but this year I found myself able to dive in deep both as a listener and as a lowly practitioner of music (particularly having picked up guitar and starting to understand music writing at a basic level). Starting this, as well as surprisingly managing to keep up with the rate I so daringly set at the start of the year, has been a small but pertinent point of pride for me.

I'm honestly quite happy with how it's been going. I never intended this project to be made for people to see, in a way it's personal and just for myself, and so far I don't think anyone has found it, so that's a good thing I guess. This regular schedule of writing about music has been an avenue for me to 1. discover music that I otherwise would not have had reason/motivation to look into 2. go out of my way to learn certain concepts and ideas in music, however small, to be able to converse about music better 3. in general, discover more about the music world, whether it be genres, artists or history.

Having something to keep up regularly like this has given me a sort of renewed focus in life. I did start this partially because I was at a loss on how to spend my time, and also because I had so much creative energy with not many avenues of output. I should mention that Auditory Appreciation was started alongside many other personal long-running projects, and the collection of them as a whole served as an anchor for my loose cannon of a sense of purpose. Several of these projects are more direct forms of creative endeavours, and in comparison, this is a more derivative one, writing about music. It has been ultimately very refreshing though, to have somewhere to write about all the love I have for music that I listen to.

My music taste has broadened a lot this year. When I first started developing a ear for modern metal music nearing the end of 2020, that resulted in me having only ears for metal the entirety of 2021. I barely listened to any other genre, and to an extent couldn't appreciate any other genre for what it was. For what it's worth, I loved my music journey in 2021, it was extremely important to me and getting into metal has been one of the best choices I've ever made. Despite that all, I'm glad I was able to step back a bit and loosen my gears, regaining a bit of my musical taste in other genres like soft rock and pop. Having a newfound diversity of sounds that I could appreciate made listening to music that much more exciting and rewarding, diving back into pop as well as the multitude of other genres in rock and alternative music.

I invested a lot more time this year specifically to discover music. Following releases and listening to them the day they drop, researching the genres' communities to comb out significant bands and artists and dip my toes in as many as I could, as well as diving into the back catalogues of artists that I loved but only listened to one or two records of. Artists like Every Time I Die, Knocked Loose and The Devil Wears Prada were names I've heard so many times and finally listened to this year, and have since become some of my favourites. Diving deeper into the discographies of artists like Fall Out Boy, Loathe, Sleep Token, My Chemical Romance and Pierce The Veil have been extremely rewarding, finding some absolute gold in their older records that I now love to death. Discovering some completely new and amazing artists like glass beach, Vildhjarta, Archspire, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows, Tallah and MOTHICA has been some of the most blissful things about the year for me.

I'm looking forward to next year, yet a bit apprehensive. There's a lot of amazing artists that I'm excited for and anticipating a lot of records from, and I have high hopes that 2023 will yet again have a lot of brilliant music for me to consume. Yet, I know that next year I have to step up my game in consuming new music, and I'm not sure how intense of a rate I'll have to push myself to listen to new stuff at. I'm also starting to pick up more instruments, and I'm sure my understanding and appreciation of music and songwriting will only deepen with time. Learning about and loving music is a journey that never ends, and this blog is a great place for me to, in a way, document my journey.

I don't really want to set any goals or hopes for 2023, I'd much rather let things happen as and when they do. Still though, a broad direction can always be beneficial. Other than listening to as much new music as possible, I want to try to delve more into EDM and its many subgenres, and possibly reconnect with my older roots. I used to love EDM when I was younger, especially dubstep, inspired by artists like Skrillex and edIT and proliferated by performers such as Poreotics/Miniotics, Fik-Shun, Les Twins, SoNevable and Shawn Wasabi. Beyond that, I'll let the musical winds blow however it wishes and let myself be taken on another year of musical discovery. When it comes to quantity though, I'm aiming to listen to at least one new record a day. I have no idea how that'll go, but I guess we'll find out as the year goes on, won't we?

Song: Dance Gavin Dance - We Own The Night [Instant Gratification, 2015]

As the year comes to a close, I figured it would be fitting to write about the song that kickstarted this entire thing in the first place. We Own The Night was the first song that made me go "wow" so hard that I just had to tell my friends everything I loved about this song in detail, and whatever that music rant was formed the basis of auditoryappreciation.

This was my first introduction to the eccentric and beautifully chaotic band Dance Gavin Dance, and despite being one of the more pop-leaning tracks in their discography, did justice to the core of their sound. It was my first taste of Tilian's and Jon's vocals, as well as their unique combined dynamic, alongside the tasteful and distinct instrumental sound led by swancore pioneer Will Swan's guitarwork, and it was amazing. I've never found anything more satisfyingly chaotic than this band's music, and it remains one of my all-time favourites, and the gem of Instant Gratification.

I've always adored the chorus of this song the most out of any part. Experiencing the intensity of the full band, relentless in their elegance, was more or less euphoric. Post-hardcore drumming overlayed with frenzied and all-over-the-place guitar licks that still amazingly held melody, while the two vocalists simultaneously dish out sonic assaults of their own unique caliber. I remember gushing about how disgustingly beautiful it was to have Tilian hold high notes behind Jon's solid screaming on the chorus, it had such a pristine and divine musical texture that I never heard before. I also remember pointing out the vocal triplets by Jon, which in hindsight aren't actually triplets, but I found the rhythm of it so unique at the time, especially with how the instrumentals synced up to it.

The guitarwork on this track is astounding. Whether it's the relentlessly chaotic tapping parts on the chorus, the pretty and elegant riff in the second verse or the funky lick going into the switchup/bridge, Will Swan has such a creative way of designing melodies that encapsulate both intensity and complexity without becoming noisy. A genius in every right, his guitarwork across the board of the band's career definitely lean a lot towards difficult and complicated, but I enjoy the challenge learning to play them as a guitarist, and a lot of them are surprisingly fun to play. I love how he paints the soundscape with so much colour while being able to clearly shape the song.

It's common knowledge that Dance Gavin Dance is a band that isn't afraid to be random and have fun with their music, and it's apparent with a lot of their other songs. We Own The Night, however, happens to be one of their most normal and collected tracks in their entire discography, and I love how extravagant and serious it feels, devoid of the usual comedic interjections from Jon. As much as I love his sporadic and nonsensical babbling, I cannot overstate how much I love that his lyrics in this song in particular had a weight of finality and profoundness to it. It made the song as a whole feel so emotionally heavy and lyrically powerful.

After going through the rest of their impressive discography, this song still remains as one of my top few favourites from them. Few songs make such a lasting impression on me as this one, and for both quality and sentiment, this song doubly deserves a spot in my personal musical hall of fame. I will never be able to fully put into words how much I love this song, and that is both a blessing and a curse I am willing to bear. Dare I say it, perfection.

Album: Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit [2015]

That's The Spirit holds a very special place in my heart, and possibly the most important record to me. It was a much needed catharsis in the aftermath of many personal catastrophes, and was simultaneously my introduction to Bring Me The Horizon and modern metal. Since then, I've listened to so much modern metal that's so much heavier, I can see why people dislike the "softness" of this record in retrospect, but as it stands I still love every bit of it.

I didn't really register it at the time, but technically the first track I heard on this record was Throne. I think I picked it up from a Spotify radio mix or possibly TikTok, but I didn't think much of it at the time, so I usually consider Happy Song my proper first impression of the record. I stumbled across one of their live performances of Happy Song, and it struck me as so revolutionarily angry (at the time, at least), I couldn't help but be captivated at the emotional capacity that song brought across.

Not long after, my deep dive and subsequent obsession with Bring Me The Horizon began. I moved on to Drown, loving the anthemic catharsis and truthfully therapeutic emotiveness that song had. Then there was Follow You, which was a great heartfelt cynical romantic love song that resonated with me at the time. After that was True Friends, being the angriest song on the record and, quite frankly, also perfect for what I needed to feel at the time. Eventually, my heart settled on Doomed, which was and still is an underrated track in my opinion. I feel it is some of Bring Me The Horizon's best work, perfectly harnessing all the feelings and emotions that the record represents in a very unique and emotionally charged way, most prominently in the chorus.

I spent a lot of time soaking in this record. Every track has its moments, understandably some more than others, but every song was great in the end. I have to commend Oh No, I loved it way more than I thought I would, and their take on a party pop song was way more of a bop than you'd imagine.

That's The Spirit is undeniably a pivotal record, both for me sentimentally and for the band sonically. It's an emotionally powerful and musically brilliant piece of work from the band, and has one of the biggest spots in my heart in all of music. I don't think I will ever find enough words to accurately express how I feel about this album, but as cheesy as it is, I truly am grateful to have come across this in my life.

Song: Bleed From Within - The End Of All We Know [Fracture (2020), 2019]

I think this was one of the first metalcore songs I fell in love with for the guitarwork. Granted, my encounters with metalcore were sparse and sporadic at the time, but I vaguely remember this song being the first time I was ever captivated by the instrumental work behind the vocals. Although not the sole catalyst, I imagine this song was one of many pertinent tracks that eventually lead to me picking up the guitar.

The End Of All We Know is a very fast-paced and energetic track from the very beginning. The riffage is speedy and full of vigour, coupling fast, bouncy licks and colourful tapping. Once the vocals come in, it only gets bouncier, Scott unleashing his rage over a groovy two-step beat. The blast chugs that follow are some of the best moments in the whole track, and I believe was the section that wowed me instrumentally.

The chorus has a super open sound and is very anthemic and arena-esque, especially with the reverb-ed gang vocals. The lead lines in the back are super fun, and the chorus as a whole is super solid.

The main breakdown is super fun, despite being the exact same riff. I love how they build up to it, and the callout moment is just perfect metalcore. I don't even mind them reusing the riff because, honestly, I want to hear it again.

I don't put this song on very often, but when I do I always get excited to headbang to the song once again. It's definitely one of the more iconic metalcore songs in the past few years for me, and I have to give credit where it's due, it definitely was consequential to both my love for metalcore and me picking up guitar. Thank you, Bleed From Within.

Album: glass beach - the first glass beach album [2019]

A good friend of mine, who also loves music but dabbles more in the alternative and hip hop side of music, recommended the first track of this record to me a while back. Since then, I've given myself the joy of repeatedly delving into this gold mine of alternative rock, full of creativity and personality that makes it stand out amongst the past decade of alternative and experimental rock.

classic j dies and goes to hell part 1 was the song that showed me the wonders of glass beach, and to this day still has my heart. It encompasses a lot of glass beach's sound while being one of the most anthemic tracks on the record. Its chorus is just pure heaven to me, and I don't feel like I can or want to dissect this song.

There's an amazing variety of soundscapes throughout this record. Developing from the basic rock instruments, glass beach branches out into many different textures and effects, including trumpets, vocoders, distortions, theremins, synths and also straight up ambient interludes. I love that they didn't limit themselves to the extent of their instruments, and with that managed to innovate and design such new and wonderful soundscapes.

Their influences are plenty and evident throughout the record. Stemming from a general emo sentiment, the sound also comes through occasionally in more anthemic and emotive tracks like cold weather and glass beach, but there's also a prominent influence from math rock and EDM in many of the tracks. As a band, it seems they've been adamant on being genre-fluid and avoiding definitive bounds, and ultimately have been successful too.

The record is all over the place, seemingly capturing many facets of the band's life experiences into one combined effort. It may be a bit jarring to get into at first, and it definitely has barriers for those not used to experimental rock or ambient work. After gaining familiarity with the album though, it is undoubtedly a genuine, passionate piece of work that is full of talent and quality just about every step of the way.

the first glass beach album is an amazing debut record and possibly has one of the strongest first impressions I've ever seen. After basking in the quality of this record, I really cannot help but be excited and in eager anticipation for what may come next from them. This is one of the best alt rock records I've ever come across, and I have a feeling I will come back to it many, many times in the next few decades.

Song: Ice Nine Kills - Take Your Pick (feat. Corpsegrinder) [Welcome To Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2, 2021]

Old brutality meets new brutality. Ice Nine Kills turned their heavy dial up to eleven on this track just to give Corpsegrinder a good baseline to go even heavier on, and the result is a face-melting deathcore-worthy slammer.

From the moment it starts, they let you know you're in for a mean one. Heart monitor beeps and a quick announcement precede an immediate dose of heaviness, with some of Spencer's lowest screams for a verse from the get-go. The drumming is relentless and the guitarwork is cheekily insane. It's just relentless heaviness all throughout, only ever stopping to prepare for even bigger punches.

It's wild how low Spencer gets with his screams and how heavy the rest of the band manages to reach before Corpsegrinder comes in. Juxtaposing cheesy love theatrics next to brutality has an unprecedented heaviness. Right before the major breakdown, they go into a false calm section so that they can slam the breakdown even harder.

The growl is inhuman and the pinch harmonics only double the pure evil, but unbelievably, it still gets heavier. I love the second buildup, the grit in Corpsegrinder's growls are incomprehensibly feral, and I love the way Spencer screams "and a fucking axe to" as if he was saying it through gritted teeth, it has such a raw intensity to it that is perfect to lead up to Corpsegrinder's one-of-a-kind growl. Coupled with relentless double kicks and low ass chugs, it is such a moment. His screams after still only manage to get even crazier, with low growls only he can manage.

It's no surprise that the best part of this song by far is the breakdown, and the addition of Corpsegrinder's iconic brutality might be one of the best things on Welcome To Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2, but I have to give props to the band for being able to match his heaviness to give us one of the most brutal metalcore songs in recent years.

Album: Ice Nine Kills - Welcome To Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2 [2021]

When I first heard about Ice Nine Kills and their horror themed metalcore record coming out, I felt it was a bit gimmicky and didn't bother to spin it at first. After the record dropped, I saw Nik Nocturnal's reaction video to Take Your Pick and I realised that there was a lot, lot more to the album than just an interesting theme.

Welcome To Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2 is the sequel to The Silver Scream, a critically acclaimed metalcore record that I have never heard of. Even till now, I have yet to listen to it, but it's clear they made a name for themselves with that record, and cemented it even further in this one.

My favourite thing about this record is, despite the limitations of being horror movie-based songs, they manage to weave such intricate songs out of it, staying true and paying tribute to the context of the cinematics whilst putting their own twist on the musical aspect. They manage to capture the essence of each movie quite well, yet able to excel in bringing the best of metalcore into it. There are so many layers going on in the soundscape at any time, and it's clear they put a lot of thought and effort into making the music really immersive and high quality.

It's unbelievable how talented the whole band is. Their identity is apparent in every song and their songwriting is full of character, no matter who's perspective they're writing from. The drumming is expert and always the perfect amount of intensity for the moment, and some of the double kicks are insanely fast. The guitarwork throughout the record is wild, never focusing on riffing but always complementing the song's needs. Sure, there are solos here and there that are crazy tasteful, but I adore how the guitar licks underlying the vocals tend to help set up the atmosphere and sprinkle in some fun personality. The vocals are undeniably robust, whether clean or unclean. Spencer's cleans are powerful and anthemic at times, and both his and Ricky's screams are violently perfect. I love how the band works as a whole more than just constituent parts, always constantly aware of how to complement each other's sonic potential to create such disgustingly beautiful music.

The guest spots are super cool, albeit some of them being underutilised. Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach is such a cool person in general, but I felt like I didn't even know he was on the song. Brandon Saller of Atreyu, Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King and Buddy Nielsen of Senses Fail were decent guest vocalists, but it felt like the only guest vocalist who really injected any kind of their personality and presence into the song they guested on was Corpsegrinder.

Gripes aside, the record as a whole is pristine. Their choruses on just about every song is superb, the drumming is super clean and punchy, the guitarwork is insane and stylistic. I love all the little additional sounds they throw in, never sticking to the basic metalcore sounds. The choirs on A Rash Decision, the toy sounds in Assault & Batteries' breakdown, the iconic horror sound in The Shower Scene, cowbells on Hip To Be Scared, high pitched vocals on Take Your Pick, and movie screams on Wurst Vacation. There's so much character in every song I can't help but fall in love with how diverse this record becomes. It's an amazing metalcore piece of art, and was one of the best things to come out of 2021.
